Beams are relatively large steel
structural sections. Common beams are the S-shape
(American Standard I-beam) and the W-shape (wide
flange). The M-shape includes miscellaneous
shapes such as Junior beams and H Beams. Beams are
designated by their shape, height, and weight (in lbs per
foot of length), e.g., W5 x 16.
The W-shape has parallel inner and outer
flange surfaces of constant thickness.
The S-shape has a slope of approximately 17 degrees on the
inner flange surfaces. The wide flange
design provides greater cross-sectional area in the flanges,
which results in greater strength.
