The C-shape is similar to the S-shape (I Beam) in that its inner flange surface is also sloped approximately 17 degrees.  The C-shape is especially useful where a single flat surface on one side is required.  Structural channels are designated by their shape, width, and weight (in lbs per foot of length), e.g., C6 x 13.  Bar size channels are designated by their shape, width, depth, and thickness, e.g., C2 x 1/2 x 1/8.

Although there is some overlap, a shape is classified Bar Size when its greatest dimension (excluding length) is less than 3 inches.  It is Structural when at least one of its dimension (excluding length) is 3 inches or greater.
